Authentication Guide
Professional Authentication Recommended
Chanel bags are among the most counterfeited luxury items. "Super fakes" are extremely sophisticated. For purchases over $1,000, professional authentication is strongly recommended.
Critical Authentication Facts
Authenticity card number MUST match bag serial
The number on the authenticity card should exactly match the serial sticker inside the bag. For post-2021 bags, there is NO card or sticker - only a chip.

Serial sticker has TWO cross-hatched lines (X pattern)
Authentic Chanel serial stickers have two subtle, embossed cross-hatch lines that form an X pattern when viewed under light. Counterfeits often have only one line or none.

Post-2021 bags have NO sticker and NO card
If someone is selling a "new" bag from 2021+ with a serial sticker or authenticity card, it's a fake. Chanel completely phased these out.

Quilting should be symmetrical and aligned
The quilted pattern should be perfectly symmetrical. The back pocket on a Classic Flap should align exactly with the quilting - many fakes have misaligned pocket stitching.

Serial Number & Authenticity Card
Chanel uses serial numbers and authenticity cards to track production. The format has changed significantly over time.
Chanel removed serial number stickers and authenticity cards. Only embedded microchips are used.
Sticker Format:
NO STICKER - chip only
Example: Scan required with NFC-enabled device

Microchip Era
2021 - Present
Serial Sticker Authentication (Pre-2021)
For bags made before 2021, the serial sticker is a key authentication point.
Color and finish
✓ AUTHENTIC
Gold/tan background with clean white numbers. Slight metallic sheen.
✗ COUNTERFEIT
Too yellow, too brown, matte finish, blurry numbers
Cross-hatch pattern (X)
✓ AUTHENTIC
Two subtle diagonal lines forming an X, visible when tilted under light
✗ COUNTERFEIT
Only one line, no lines, or lines too visible/prominent
Edges
✓ AUTHENTIC
Clean, precise edges. Sticker is difficult to remove without damaging.
✗ COUNTERFEIT
Rough edges, peeling easily, looks like a generic label
Font
✓ AUTHENTIC
Specific proprietary font - numbers slightly narrow and tall
✗ COUNTERFEIT
Generic fonts, numbers too wide or too rounded

Diamond count
✓ AUTHENTIC
Classic Flap bags have consistent diamond counts per size. The quilting should be uniform with no flat or squished diamonds.
✗ COUNTERFEIT
Inconsistent diamond sizes, uneven puffiness, flat areas
💡 Count diamonds across the front - should be approximately 9 diamonds wide on Medium Classic Flap
Stitching
✓ AUTHENTIC
10-11 stitches per diamond side. Stitching should be straight, even, and the same color as the leather. Thread should NOT look waxy or plasticky.
✗ COUNTERFEIT
Fewer stitches (7-8), uneven spacing, thread too thick or wrong color
💡 Use a magnifying glass to count stitches accurately

CC Lock
The CC lock should have the right C overlapping the left C at the top, and the left C overlapping the right C at the bottom. The gap between the Cs should be minimal but visible.
Chain weight
Authentic chain straps have substantial weight. Gold-plated brass feels heavier than counterfeit lightweight metals. The chain links should be perfectly uniform.
Zipper pulls
Interior zippers should have "CHANEL" or "EP" (for Éclair Paris) embossed. Older bags may have "YKK" zippers which is also authentic for that era.
CC Lock Orientation
The interlocking CC logo follows a specific pattern: right C over left at top, left C over right at bottom. This is consistent across all authentic Chanel products.
