Chanel

Critical Counterfeit Risk✓ Verified Information

Chanel changed its system in 2021 — removing serial stickers and authenticity cards in favor of embedded microchips. That single fact exposes a huge share of fakes. Check the serial era, the quilting, and the CC lock together.

Serial Sticker & Microchip Eras

Pre-2021 bags carry a gold/tan serial sticker; the number should match the authenticity card. Since 2021 there is no sticker or card — only a scannable chip.

Sequential 7-digit serials on a gold/tan sticker with white numbers; the leading digits indicate the year range.

Example: 3456789 ≈ 1990s

  • Authenticity-card number doesn't match the serial sticker inside the bag.
  • A post-2021 bag sold "new" that still has a sticker or authenticity card.
  • Serial sticker missing the subtle embossed cross-hatch (X) pattern.

Serial Sticker Details

Color & finish

✓ AUTHENTIC

Gold/tan background, clean white numbers, slight metallic sheen.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Too yellow or brown, matte finish, blurry numbers.

Cross-hatch (X) pattern

✓ AUTHENTIC

Two subtle diagonal lines forming an X, visible when tilted under light.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Only one line, or no cross-hatch pattern at all.

Quilting & Stitching

Diamond pattern

✓ AUTHENTIC

Uniform, symmetrical diamonds (≈9 across the front of a Medium Classic Flap); the back pocket aligns with the quilting.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Inconsistent diamond sizes, flat or squished areas, misaligned pocket stitching.

Stitch count

✓ AUTHENTIC

10–11 stitches per diamond side, straight and even, thread matching the leather.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Fewer stitches (7–8), uneven spacing, waxy/plasticky or wrong-color thread.

Count under magnification

Quilting symmetry and stitch count are among the hardest things for counterfeiters to nail. Use a magnifier and count both sides of symmetrical elements — they should match.

CC Lock & Hardware

  • CC lock: the right C overlaps the left at the top, and the left C overlaps the right at the bottom, with a minimal but visible gap.
  • Chain straps are heavy (gold-plated brass) with perfectly uniform links — no light, rattly metal.
  • Interior zipper pulls are embossed "CHANEL" or "EP" (older bags may correctly use "YKK").
  • Hardware engraving is crisp and the plating tone is consistent across all pieces.

Where to buy safely

Buy from Chanel boutiques or resellers that authenticate (The RealReal, Fashionphile, Rebag). Be wary of stock photos, prices well under market, and rushed, irreversible payment requests.

Get Professional Authentication

Visual checks catch obvious fakes, but professional authentication is the only way to be certain — especially for high-value purchases.
