Gucci

Critical Counterfeit Risk✓ Verified Information

Gucci is one of the most counterfeited luxury brands in the world. Modern "super fakes" copy serial tags, fonts, and even QR codes — so no single marker proves authenticity. Use these checks together, and have any high-value bag professionally authenticated.

Serial Number Tag

On most modern Gucci bags the serial number is heat-stamped on the BACK of an interior leather tag. If the tag is stitched down on all four sides so you cannot flip it, treat the bag as fake.

  • The serial number is on the reverse of the leather tag — the tag should be sewn so you can lift it to read the back.
  • Typically 10–13 digits arranged in two rows, with no more than six digits per row.
  • Numbers are thin and cleanly stamped — not deep, thick, or blurry.
  • The style/serial code is not a unique ID: two bags of the same model can share it.

Tag attachment

✓ AUTHENTIC

Sewn on top only — you can flip the tag to read the stamped serial on the back.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Stitched down on all four sides, hiding the back. A common counterfeit shortcut.

Stamp depth

✓ AUTHENTIC

Thin, even characters, lightly and cleanly pressed into the leather.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Numbers stamped too deep and too thick, often uneven or smudged.

QR codes (2016+)

Since around 2016, many Gucci items include a QR code and "Controllato" quality card. These add a layer of verification — but counterfeiters now fake them too, so a QR code or card alone never proves authenticity.

Front of the Tag & Logo

  • The front of the tag has exactly three lines: ® on line one, "GUCCI" in all caps on line two, and "made in italy" in lowercase on line three.
  • Any extra lines of text beyond those three is a definitive fake indicator.
  • In the logo, the "G" and both "C"s are perfectly round and even.
  • Gucci's number font is serif — look for small round dots at the ends of strokes on digits like 2, 3, and 5.
  • A fourth line of text, or "made in italy" capitalized.
  • Misaligned, off-center, or crooked stamping on the tag.
  • Sans-serif numbers, or digits without the little serif dots.
  • Logo letters that look oval, squished, or unevenly spaced.

Controllato Card & Hardware

Authentic Gucci bags include a "Controllato" card (Italian for "checked"), indicating the bag passed quality control. Hardware should feel heavy and substantial, with crisp, deep engraving and an even finish that matches across all pieces.

Hardware

✓ AUTHENTIC

Solid and weighty, with sharp engraved logos and a consistent, even plating tone.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Lightweight, hollow-feeling, with shallow or fuzzy engraving and mismatched finishes.

Controllato card

✓ AUTHENTIC

Clean print, correct font, included alongside the bag and dust bag.

✗ COUNTERFEIT

Blurry print, wrong font, or missing entirely — though presence alone is not proof.

Stitching & Overall Build

  • Stitching is even, tight, and straight, with a consistent number of stitches across matching seams.
  • Patterns (GG monogram, stripes) line up cleanly at the seams.
  • Leather feels supple and smells like real leather — not chemical or plastic.
  • No loose threads, glue residue, or crooked panels.

Where to buy safely

Buy directly from Gucci, Gucci concessions in reputable department stores, or resale platforms that authenticate (The RealReal, Rebag, Fashionphile). Be especially cautious of marketplace listings with stock photos, prices well below retail, or sellers who rush you.

Get Professional Authentication

Visual checks catch obvious fakes, but professional authentication is the only way to be certain — especially for high-value purchases.
